Creating a Safer School Environment at St. Michael School

St. Michael School was one of the businesses and institutions selected to participate in the Engaging Men for Gender Equality in the Private Sector project, implemented by RWAMREC with support from GIZ Rwanda. Following the training, teachers reflected on practical ways to promote gender equality and create a safer environment for all students.

One of the key initiatives they introduced was the creation of a dedicated girls' room where female students can manage menstruation with dignity, privacy, and comfort. The space provides support to girls during their menstrual periods and helps ensure that menstruation does not become a barrier to learning.

The teachers also recognized the importance of preventing sexual harassment within the school community. To raise awareness and foster a culture of respect, they displayed anti-sexual-harassment posters throughout the school premises, making it clear that harassment is unacceptable and informing students and staff about appropriate behavior and reporting mechanisms.

Inspired by the positive action taken by St. Michael School, RWAMREC developed a set of anti-sexual-harassment posters and signs that organizations can freely download and display in their workplaces, schools, and institutions. Through this initiative, RWAMREC aims to support more organizations in creating safe, respectful, and gender-responsive environments for everyone.
