Prevention+
Prevention+ is a five-year project, funded by Promundo, aimed at preventing gender-based violence (GBV) and promoting gender equality in Karongi District. The project works with schools, local leaders, and communities to promote gender-transformative education, positive masculinities, and community dialogue, creating sustainable mechanisms to prevent GBV at grassroots and institutional levels.
The Prevention+ project, implemented between July 2016 and 2017, is part of a five-year initiative funded by Promundo to motivate grassroots-level responses to existing and potential occurrences of GBV and address the factors that lead to gender inequality in Karongi District. The project targets both schools and communities to build capacity and promote long-term change.
Key activities included:
School-based interventions:
Gender and GBV prevention training for headmasters, teachers, and local leaders.
Implementation of Program H&M to train teachers for group education in selected schools.
Creation of Boys4Change clubs (each with 60 male and female students) trained to cascade lessons on gender equality, positive masculinities, and GBV prevention to all students.
Gender-transformative group education and refresher training for teachers to enhance skills and fill gaps.
Production of informational materials to improve GBV awareness and knowledge sharing.
Community-based interventions:
Gender and GBV prevention training for Parents Evening Dialogue (PED) committees at village level to build capacity for community support.
So far, 504 PED committee members in three sectors were trained, with a goal to train all 3,759 members by 2018.
Training of National Women’s Council (NWC) members and Mencare+ facilitators to facilitate community dialogues during Imigoroba y’Ababyeyi (Parents’ Evenings).
The project has reached 20 secondary schools out of the planned 52, promoting a safe and supportive environment for students and empowering communities to actively prevent GBV.
