Gender Responsive Schools

The Gender Responsive Schools project, funded by Plan International, aimed to promote gender equality, positive masculinity, and GBV prevention in schools and communities in Bugesera District. The project trained teachers, community leaders, couples, and students, while organizing school-based activities to reinforce learning and encourage youth leadership in gender-responsive initiatives.

The Gender Responsive Schools project was implemented between July 2016 and June 2017, with support from Plan International, in Bugesera District. The project sought to foster gender equality and positive masculinities among teachers, students, parents, and community members to prevent gender-based violence and promote equitable practices in schools and communities.

Key activities included:

  • Training: 300 teachers, PTC (Parent Teacher Committee) members, and community opinion leaders were trained on positive masculinity and gender equality. Additionally, 50 couples were trained to champion positive masculinity and gender equality in their communities.

  • Student engagement: 300 girls and boys were trained on gender equality, positive masculinity, and GBV prevention.

  • School-based competitions and incentives: Competitions were organized in five schools, with five loudspeakers and stabilizers awarded to Boys 4 Change clubs, and 45 top-performing students recognized for their engagement and leadership.

Through these combined interventions, the project strengthened knowledge and skills around gender equality, empowered students and community members as agents of change, and fostered a safer, more gender-responsive school environment.
